Toshiba employee accused of espionage for Russia

On October 20, 2005 all Japanese major newspapers - Asahi Shimbun, Yomiuri Shimbun, Mainichi Shimbun and Nihonkeizai shimbun informed that a Japanese employee of Toshiba Corporation has been caught selling confidential data to a Russian official.

Police accused a Russian trade official, 35, and a Toshiba person, 30, on Oct 20, 2005, police said. A Russian trade official stationed in Japan bought company secrets - reportedly featuring military applications - from a Japanese salesman of Toshiba Discrete Semiconductor Technology Corp (Kawasaki-shi, Kanagawa, Japan) at 1M yen in total of 9 times from Sep 2004 to May 2005.
The informations were no serious secrets, just sales catalogs, Toshiba Corp said.

No names were disclosed by officials.
