Airstrike in Ingushetia: 16 militants killed

On March 28, 2011 the National Antiterrorist Committee reported that Russian forces have killed 16 rebels and destroyed an important militant base during an operation in Ingushetia. An air strike by helicopters assisted special forces in the raid in the Sunzhen forest.

Nikolai Sintsov, a spokesman for the National Antiterrorist Committee said "in the course of the investigation into the criminal case over the January 24 terrorist attack at the Domodedovo airport, the Federal Security Service and the Investigation Committee, jointly with the Defence Ministry and the Interior Ministry, planned and carried out a special operation to stop the criminal activity of the bandits who had staged the act of terror."

"As a result of a targeted air strike and a land operation, a militant's base was destroyed, at which suicide bombers had been trained, including for terrorist attacks in North Ossetia and Ingushetia. According to preliminary information, 16 bandits were destroyed, and two participants in the Domodedovo bombing were detained," Sintsov said.

Ingush security sources are quoted as saying a top aide to Doku Umarov - Supyan Abdulayev - was among the militants killed in the raid on their base. It was hidden in a forest in the Sunzha district, near the border with Chechnya. In the late 1980s Supyan Abdulayev (born on November 6, 1956 in Kazakhstan), was a founder member of the Islamic Renaissance Party established in the Soviet Union. He took active part in the First and Second Chechen wars, and since 2007 was the Deputy Emir of Caucasus Emirate.

There are suspicions that Doku Umarov himself may have been killed along with amir Khamzat (Aslan Butukaev or Byutukayev), a leader of the Riyadus-Salikhin Reconnaissance and Sabotage Battalion of Chechen Martyrs, the group which claimed responsibility for many suicide bombings in Russia, including the Domodedovo airport terrorist attack on January 24, 2011.

On March 29 the Russian Investigative Committee (SK)spokesman Vladimir Markin also said that Doku Umarov and another four members of illegal armed groups have been charged in absentia with organizing a terrorist attack at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport. "The SK continues the investigation into the criminal case over the act of terror at the Domodedovo airport on January 24. The investigators passed resolutions to arraign active members of illegal paramilitary formations, including Doku Umarov and Aslan Byutukayev, by the hallmarks of crime spelled out in Article 209, Part 1, and Article 210, Part 1, of Russia's Criminal Code [setting up a stable armed group and criminal community], as well as Adam Ganizhev, Islam Yevloyev, and Aslan Tsechoyev under Article 209, Part 2 and Article 210, Part 2 [participating in a stable armed group and criminal community]," Vladimir Markin told Itar-Tass.
